As a fellow canuck, I have to agree with your visitors from the north. The first time I traveled south it was to Belize. I distinctly remember being astonished by the pitch blackness of the night and how bright the stars were. Even now that I live in the country, away from the glare of city lights, and can see millions of stars, the darkness simply does not compare.
I'll be traveling to the arctic north this summer for the first time; it will be interesting to live in near-24-hour light for two months!
Gorgeous photographs, by the way!
