The heart-shaped leaves of this aquatic plant resemble small versions of waterlily (Nymphaea) leaves, hence the scientific name of Nymphoides aquatica. A similar, non-native member of the genus, crested floatingheart (Nymphoides cristata), is rapidly invading south Florida water bodies.
