As most beachcombers are aware:

In this instance I found a scrap of sponge.
It wasn’t notable in any particular way other than for the fact that it’s something on this beach I don’t usually see. I also picked out of the sand a big shard of thick shell that looked as if it came from a conch and was smooth on the underside. Another good find! Also found a football, although rather flat — but it held air when we pumped it up at home.
Goes to show: One man’s garbage is another man’s gold.
