Farther toward the equator there is less light refraction at dawn and dusk (shorter atmosphere path) and so dusk and dawn are of very short duration. Even in Panama, where I spent a sabbatical on Barro Colorado Island, it went from bright day to pitch black in 20 minutes!

And the converse at dawn. Consider the refrain to Rudyard Kipling's poem MANDALAY
