First mile is always the toughest

All engineers know:

The wider the river the longer the bridge.

Tamiami Trail’s new one mile bridge under construction

For the Everglades and Big Cypress Swamp that adds up to a good eighty miles if you were to build a single span over its shallow expanse from modern-day Miami to Naples’ back door.

Efforts are underway to expand the current network of bridges under the Tamiami Trail, starting with a one mile bridge (currently under construction) and eventually, if all goes as planned, totalling up to 5.5 miles more.

What’s that runner’s slogan about the first mile being the toughest?

Maybe that means the next couple are more downhill.
