For the Everglades and Big Cypress Swamp that adds up to a good eighty miles if you were to build a single span over its shallow expanse from modern-day Miami to Naples’ back door.
Efforts are underway to expand the current network of bridges under the Tamiami Trail, starting with a one mile bridge (currently under construction) and eventually, if all goes as planned, totalling up to 5.5 miles more.
What’s that runner’s slogan about the first mile being the toughest?
