Right you are about red skies at night. Same up here in SWGA. The gulf influence extends at least a 199 miles inland as far as Thomas County, anyhow, where I live. Amazing when I see in local weather reports "lake effect" winds or rain. The Golf (as we pronounce it) is at least 75 miles away and still drives our weather here most of the year.
