That's a good question: it could be my nostalgic dreams of it being continental apple season up north where the true edible varieties grow. Additionally, you only find the pond apples in the hydrologic heart of the swamp, i.e. the deep water. The entire setting is quite scenic, especially in the summer when they are hanging, and periodically kerplunking, on and off of the vine.
